Hi, friends!
This past week has been monumental in our journey away from the high rates we saw at the end of 2023. The last three months have been a mix of ups and downs, but we've finally hit a stride that's great news for those of us rooting for lower rates! 📉
After several false starts, it feels like we’re finally on a promising path. Measured by the 10-year Treasury yields, we've seen a serious effort to bring rates down since their climb began in 2022. This latest attempt is looking hopeful.
From May through July, we’ve been cautiously optimistic thanks to encouraging inflation data. The Fed has been hinting at rate cuts, although they've remained patient due to a strong labor market. However, this week’s jobs report has shifted the landscape.
Job creation in July fell short of expectations, the unemployment rate increased, and wage growth slowed. This, combined with other economic indicators, has pushed rates even lower. 💼📊
Before this week, traders were expecting a half-point rate cut by the Fed. Now, they're looking at a full point cut. While short-term rates have moved more dramatically than long-term ones like mortgages, Friday saw one of the biggest single-day drops in mortgage rates in the past 20 years! Interest rates dropped Friday, and that's fantastic news for all of us!
Looking forward, predicting the future is always tricky, and we need to keep the lessons of early 2024 in mind. Further rate improvements depend on continued disappointing economic data, with key reports on the horizon. We’re closely watching Monday’s ISM Services Index and the next Consumer Price Index (CPI).
The upcoming month and a half could be particularly volatile as the market rethinks the Fed's recent decisions. Stay tuned, and let's navigate this together!
