Hi friend,
Boulder Colorado has a laid-back feel, absolutely breathtaking mountain views, and some pretty awesome culinary choices but is that enough to make you want to move there? Today, I would like to share with you 10 reasons NOT to move to Boulder Colorado.
- It's costly: Boulder is extremely costly compared to other parts of Colorado. The housing market is incredibly competitive and leaves practically no options for the middle/ lower class.
- Politics: Boulder is extremely liberal: not a bad thing just something to be made aware of. If you are unable to deal with progressive politics- avoid Boulder.
- Population: Boulder has106,000 people in it! If you are looking for a small town feel, Boulder is certainly not the place for you. It may even feel bigger than 106,000 if you visit because the people are crammed into a small area.
- City congestion: Adding to the feel of Boulder, there is a lot of congestion downtown due to tourism and people that commute to Boulder for work.
- Environmentally Conscious: Boulder has a huge push for sustainable living. If you like driving a big truck or parking close to where you are going, Boulder may not be the place for you. The city is strategically designed for compact cars.
- College town: Boulder is, at heart, a college town. CU Boulder is right in the middle of town and college kids populate the town and add to the traffic.
- Strange laws: Boulder has some laws that you might find strange. For example, you can not own an animal. Animals are considered to be a true family member. You are not the dogs “owner” or “master” like you would expect in other states. In addition, it is now fully legal for a male or woman to be topless in public. This is not incredibly common but is something to consider if this kind of thing makes you uncomfortable.
- Height limits: You can not build a building taller than 55 feet so that there is no obstructed view of the mountains.
- Marijuana: Recreational marijuana use is legal in Boulder. It is prohibited in public areas such as the city streets or establishments but its presence is definitely still felt.
- Lack of diversity: The stereotypical demographic of Boulder is white, wealthy, athletic and liberal. This, of course, is not the case for all of its residents but is something to think about if considering a move there.
If reading this list made you sad, don't be! I know each city has its fair share of pros and cons, I just thought it would be helpful to share the most common complaints for living in Boulder.
