Hi friend,
A couple times a week, I get the chance to hop on the phone with someone that has never been to Texas before, and I get to answer their questions in relation to all things relocating to Texas and all this Houston suburbs. These phone calls last somewhere between 35 minutes and 55 minutes. Well there have been some questions that get asked over and over again, and because I am from here, they don't seem like a big deal to me, but it dawned on me this week, that I should be turning these repeat questions into blog posts and videos. So welcome to a little series where I answer some of your most asked questions.
What are the bugs like in Houston TX?
Many folks have been asking me about the bugs, cock roaches, and spiders here in Texas. The first couple times I was asked this, I had to giggle. I never knew bugs would bring so much concern. Well let me please put those concerns to rest. There are not any crazy bug problems in the Houston suburbs and north Houston neighborhoods.
If there was one that I think should be on your radar, it would be the mosquito. There have been some years where we have had the mosquitos acting quite a bit as an annoyance. But when they do get bad, the cities and counties have actions in place to correct the problem. There are trucks that drive around and fog neighborhoods, and one year they even fogged the city from above. This past summer (2021), I barely noticed the mosquitos. I think that is because we had a huge freeze this year.
If you do move here, and you end up having a mosquito problem, please make sure there is no standing water in your yard (or your neighbors). This is the number one cause of mosquitos. And if that doesn't solve your problem, you could always get a misting system installed on your fence line.
If you don't know much about me, I was born in Texas, moved away when I was 4, and came back when I was 17. So I have been here 4 + 18 years. We haven't had any major mosquito problems in the last few years, and it is important to note, that mosquitos aren't attracted to everyone. If you feel you are a magnet for mosquitos, my two favorite things to do are light a citronella candle or where one of those mosquito repellent bracelets. They make so many different types, including non-chemically ones!
Now for cockroaches and spiders. I do recommend you get your home treated for pest once a quarter. As long as I am doing this on a regular basis, I do not have any spider problems. Now I do sometimes see American Cockroaches. I would say I see 1 every quarter. I am pretty sure they travel through the sewer system. We just take care of him, and don't think about it outside of that moment. There are other types of cockroaches, but as long as you are “clean people”, you won't run into them.
One bug that I do want to warn you about, are ants. If we have a really dry summer, and someone isn't keeping an eye on their yard, ants can be a problem. So like ant piles. I worry about them and see them at schools and parks when we haven't seen much rain. This year they were not on my radar, but I remember being super worried about them when my two girls were younger. But I haven't had to worry about them in the last few years.
Oh, and I don't have any horror stories about moths. I have never really come across them.
