Hi friend,
A couple times a week, I get the chance to hop on the phone with someone that has never been to Texas before, and I get to answer their questions in relation to all things relocating to Texas and all this Houston suburbs. These phone calls last somewhere between 35 minutes and 55 minutes. Well there have been some questions that get asked over and over again, and because I am from here, they don't seem like a big deal to me, but it dawned on me this week, that I should be turning these repeat questions into blog posts and videos. So welcome to a little series where I answer some of your most asked questions.
I am moving to Texas, should I worry about alligators and snakes?
Many folks have been asking me about the snakes and alligators here in Texas. I have seen a few snakes in the past 18 years. If you don't have a nearby water source, then it is likely that you won't see any snakes. And if you do see snakes, it will probably just be a garden snake.
Now if you are curious about the ones you need to avoid, those are the copperhead and cottonmouth. Those are the only two that I hear people talking about.
Here is what the cotton mouth looks like:
And this is what the copperhead looks like:
And for alligators, I have seen a few alligators, but not in the north Houston suburbs, but in Fort Bend county. There are some nature trails that we use to bike in the Katy and Cinco Ranch area. There are some overlook spots with some swamps, and I have seen one or two alligators there. And then there is a nature park, Brazos Bend State Park. There you will find 40 Acre Lake and Elm Lake. Ryan Chlebek, writes about the park here. It is really stinking cool, and you will see so many alligators if you visit.
But that above, is my only run in with alligators. No issues away from those preserves.
