The district is excited to share that its ninth elementary school, Audubon Elementary, is under construction, with doors opening in August 2024. It has been nearly two decades since MISD last revisited elementary boundaries following the inauguration of Ellisor Elementary in 2005.
Given the growth in the area and the recent school constructions from the November 2022 Bond, it's a great moment to revisit and update the elementary attendance zones. This revamp is in anticipation of welcoming students to Audubon Elementary for the 2024-25 academic year. Additionally, next year, MISD will begin mapping out boundaries for intermediate school #3 and junior high #3.
The boundary refinement process typically spans a year prior to the new school's opening. This process encompasses gathering feedback from parents, assessing student population forecasts, crafting tentative boundaries, initiating registration processes for incoming students in the spring, and appropriately allocating and balancing school staff.
Being responsible financial custodians of taxpayers' contributions is a guiding principle for the MISD board and administration. Throughout the boundary assessment, several factors are considered. These include efficient facility use to alleviate overcrowding, equitable student distribution, delivering top-tier education, and strategizing for future expansions, all while valuing stakeholder feedback.
Here are the guiding principles that will steer the boundary revision:
– Feedback from MISD parents.
– Campus capacity and seating space allocation.
– Demographic considerations.
– Proximity to residential areas and commute durations.
– Current zoning for established residential zones.
– Physical barriers, like major roads, railroads, and waterways.
– Minimizing family disruptions.
– Potential future school locations.
– Estimated campus enrollments.
– Transportation routes and related safety measures.
Commitment to clear communication remains central to MISD's mission. In line with the boundary adjustment, they have rolled out a dedicated website and timeline. MISD invites parents of secondary school students and community members to share their insights at [email protected].
Here's a glimpse at the timeline:
– Sept. 11: Elementary parents will receive a survey link via email to share boundary adjustment perspectives.
– Sept. 21: Survey concludes. MISD starts crafting the preliminary boundaries based on the feedback.
– Oct. 18: Parents will get an email link detailing the proposed boundaries. Our objective is to fine-tune the proposal using feedback from elementary parents.
– Nov. 1: Post feedback, MISD refines and finalizes the boundary proposition.
– Dec. 11: The MISD Board of Trustees will review the boundary proposal for approval.
Throughout this journey, expect regular updates from MISD via phone, text, or email. Your active participation will aid MISD in framing a boundary proposal that harmoniously blends our mission with the feedback received.
Collaboration is invaluable to MISD. They are eager to connect and listen to the community's insights throughout this endeavor.
