Here at Jo & Co., we love exploring all around the community and today we are looking at the different state parks here around The Woodlands, TX! It's always nice to step away from the busy city and step into nature sometimes and this post will give you different options.
W G Jones State Forest | 1328 Farm to Market Rd 1488, Conroe, TX 77384
W. Goodrich Jones State park stretches over 1,700 acres of land. It is one of nations largest working urban forests with research and demonstrations held here. There are nearly 15 miles of trails and pathways for walking, running and even horseback riding. Yes you read that right, you can horseback ride through this forest! There is even a designated horse-rider and trailer area but a gate combination is needed. In this state forest, you will find two small lakes where there is limited fishing and picnic areas. It is open year round during daylight hours.
Huntsville State Park | 565 Park Road 40 West, Huntsville, TX 77340
Come escape the busy life with just over 2,000 acres of recreational area. Here at Huntsville State Park, there are 21 miles of trails to enjoy if you choose to walk, run or bike. It also has geocaching opportunities as well as a chance to study nature. You will also find a bird blind and nature center, which has exhibits, bird nests and other collections to view. Huntsville state Park is fitted with Lake Raven, a 210-acre lake where you are able to fish, swim and kayak, which you are able to rent. They do allow motor boats on the water but at idle speed only. If you want to make this an overnight trip, they have camping options available too!
Stephen F. Austin State Park | Park Rd 38, San Felipe, TX 77473
Stephen F. Austin State Park is west of Houston, just past Katy. With just under 500 acres of wetland and hardwood forest, this state park is home to many animals. During your time here you may run into a variety of birds, deer, squirrels and possible even armadillos. Fitted with nine different trials to choose from, they are all manageable with the longest trail being one mile. With clearly marked trails, there is plenty to explore around this park. The trees offer some shade throughout the trails which is nice to escape the sun. There are ample options to camp from full hookups to tent sites. Be sure to check out the Stephen F. Austin historic site and museum down the road.
Lake Livingston State Park | 300 State Park Rd 65, Livingston, TX 77351
With just over 630 acres of state park, there is much to explore. With Lake Livingston being one of the largest lakes in the state of Texas, you are able to fish, swim and boat here. This park is fitted with six boat ramps, a couple stations to clean your fish and a fishing pier. Be mindful if you go out on the water, there are alligators that live there! There are six different trails that you can hike through, the longest being two miles. If you choose to walk the Pineywoods Boardwalk Trail in the evening, you will pass the Frog Pond and may hear some of the creatures sing their tunes. You will be able to see lot of different plants and wildlife as there are a few bald eagle nests around the lake.
Brazos Bend State Park | 21901 Farm to Market Rd 762, Needville, TX 77461
Brazos Bend State Park is just south of the city of Houston. With over 35 miles for hiking, biking and horseback riding they do have some trails that are wheelchair friendly. There are trails that connect with each other and circle around the lake. There is no swimming at this lake as there are alligators that live in the lake. This park has three different lakes to fish from so cast out those fishing lines from either the fishing piers or the shorelines. There are camping options here if you choose to stay the night. They have campsite, screened shelter and cabins. One unique thing about this state park is that it is home to the George Observatory. If you love looking at the night sky, this would be a perfect place to visit!
Sheldon Lake State Park | 14140 Garrett Rd, Houston, TX 77044
About 45 minutes from The Woodlands, you will find Sheldon Lake State Park and all the beautiful nature that comes with it. The trails all connect together into two miles worth of walking. The Pond Loop Trail will walk you past over 20 hatchery ponds. You are able to take a boat out to fish or you can choose to fish from the bank. There are also two different ponds you can fish from. If you want to go out on the water and relax, you can bring your own kayak or canoe and paddle around the lake. A special feature about this park is the John Jacob Observation Tower which is 82-feet high. It overlooks the whole park and you are even able to get a glimpse of the Houston skyline and the San Jacinto Monument.
