“The Woodlands, a master-planned community in Houston, and Bridgeland, a new master-planned community, are the first MPCs in Texas to reach LEED precertification by the U.S. Green Building Council.”
The Howard Hughes Corporation announced that its two award-winning master planned communities—The Woodlands and Bridgeland, both located in the Greater Houston area—have earned LEED precertification by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Woodlands and Bridgeland join an elite global group of entities recognized by LEED for being dedicated to making their communities healthy, resilient, inclusive, and inherently sustainable for residents.
“Our work to achieve LEED precertification of The Woodlands—a large-scale, award-winning community that opened in 1974 and is today home to over 120,000 residents—illustrates the Howard Hughes Corporation’s commitment to the long-term vision of founder George Mitchell for creating a self-sustaining ecosystem, one that anticipated to a remarkable degree almost 50 years ago the principles of ESG that today guide development across our national portfolio,” said David R. O’Reilly, chief executive officer of Howard Hughes Corp.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) framework helps cities and communities measure their progress toward sustainable development. LEED for Cities and Communities is designed to help local leaders execute responsible, sustainable and specific plans for natural systems, energy, water, waste, transportation and other factors contributing to quality of life. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and is influenced by engagement with hundreds of cities around the globe.
“A sustainable community strives to offer its residents a higher standard of living,” Peter Templeton, Interim CEO of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), said. “LEED-certified communities are taking action and delivering measurable outcomes that improve overall quality of life for residents. Given the extraordinary importance of climate protection, building more resilient communities is crucial. The Woodlands and Bridgeland’s LEED precertification demonstrates their leadership in this area.”
Over 28 percent of the 28,500-acre master-planned community The Woodlands is devoted to green space. The Woodlands has 151 parks, forest preserves, 220 miles of hiking and biking trails. Also, over 120,000 residents live within the master-planned community.
Bridgeland also includes 28 percent green space, according to The Howard Hughes Corporation. It was named the best selling community in the Greater Houston area by RCLCO Real Estate Consulting and has a goal of 65,000 residents when all homes are built.
