The Woodlands community is embarking on an exciting new chapter with the initiation of the South Gosling Park project in Creekside Park. Recently, the township's leadership greenlit the preliminary phase of this ambitious venture during their meeting on September 27. The park, spanning a remarkable 208 acres, is set to be the largest in The Woodlands upon completion.
An investment of $308,220, along with an additional $30,000 for materials testing, has been allocated from the Parks and Recreation Needs Assessment Reserve to kickstart this project. Shelley Sekula-Gibbs, a member of the board, expressed enthusiasm about this development, highlighting the community's desire for more outdoor facilities.
This park will not only be the largest in Harris County but also offer a blend of passive and active recreational opportunities. The initial phase demands comprehensive planning, including engineering studies, environmental assessments, and cultural surveys. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding the impact of construction on local ecosystems and water flow.
A notable feature of this park is its potential to connect with the Spring Creek Greenway. In October 2022, the township agreed in principle with Harris County for a $5 million project to link the Greenway to Gosling Road. Harris County's commitment includes the construction of a 6-mile asphalt trail in The Woodlands, extending from the Ann K Snyder Trailhead to Gosling Road.
Upon its completion, this trail will be a part of one of the United States' most extensive greenway trail systems, stretching 40 miles from Spring Creek Park in Tomball to the Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring. While the final vision of South Gosling Park remains under wraps until the completion of Phase I, early survey results are expected in early 2024.
Following the initial phase, Phase II will delve into more detailed engineering and construction plans, including infrastructure essentials like roads, parking, drainage, and utilities, before adding recreational amenities.
In addition to the park, the board also approved a collaborative agreement for a detention pond in Creekside Park at their September 21 meeting. This project, involving the Toll Brothers' The Enclave at The Woodlands subdivision, includes not just residential development but also communal amenities like trails and benches around the pond, subject to Municipal Utility District 386's approval.
Lastly, the township sanctioned a substantial investment of $2,284,525 for the replacement of turf fields at Alden Bridge Sports Park and Bear Branch Sportsfields. This extensive development reflects The Woodlands' commitment to enhancing recreational spaces and fostering community well-being.
