We know that all seasons are beautiful, but there is just something about fall that really gets us going. It gives us a chance to reconnect with friends and family through holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. Also, during the fall season, there are plenty of fun things to do in Houston with kids! You can take them to a local farm or visit a farmers' market, go on a hike or play at the park, or attend one of the city's many kid-friendly festivals or events.
So, whether you’re looking for the best place to roast marshmallows, carve pumpkins, or simply enjoy the great outdoors this autumn, we’re here to help with some great fall activities and places you can visit during the season!
Drive through the Fall foliage
- McKinney Falls State Park – 5808 McKinney Falls Pkwy, Austin, TX 78744
Just less than three hours' drive from downtown Houston, this park is an excellent location for spotting foliage and enjoying a weekend getaway from the city. Also, there are 81 campsite options and activities such as hiking or biking in 9 miles of trails, fishing, swimming, bouldering, and picnicking.
- Enchanted Rock – 16710 Ranch Rd. 965 Fredericksburg, TX 78624
Enchanted Rock State Park is just 4 hours from Sugar Land, Texas. Visitors can hike 11 miles of trails, camp, bird watch, rock-climb, and stargaze there. The park also displays some foliage in the fall along with wildflowers in the spring.
Get Lost in Corn Maze
- Froberg's Farm – 3601 Hwy 6, Alvin, TX 77511
Froberg's Farm is a friendly destination, just 34 minutes away from this city. As you walk through the Corn Maze, you'll get a sense of the vast fields and have fun finding your way out.
- Dewberry Farm – 7705 FM 362 Brookshire, TX 77423
Dewberry Farm, located less than an hour's drive from sugar land, offers more than 8 acres of corn mazes. Also, throughout the fall season, they have a variety of exciting activities. Don't miss out!
- Rocky Creek Maze – 784 Co Rd 251, Moulton, TX 77975, United States
If you're up for a little drive and looking for a fun-filled adventure, check out Rocky Creek Maze. It's two hours from Houston and has more than two and a half miles of paths winding through an 8-acre field of corn—and if you make it through the maze, you can try their haunted trail!
Go, Apple Picking
- Love Creek Orchards – 14024 TX-16 N, Medina TX 78055
Founded by a couple in 1981, this apple orchard offers apple picking, as well as other seasonal fruits. They even have a store & café where you can purchase tons of homemade goods & choose from a menu full of delicious southern comfort foods. During the fall there’s a pumpkin patch with farm animals, hay mazes, hayrides, fun games, and scarecrow building!
- Apple Valley Orchard – 12340 TX-16, Llano TX 78643
This orchard on 32 acres has over 500 trees for apple picking, as well as berries, peaches, figs, and other seasonal fruits. They also have an on-site store that sells homemade goods, local honey, ice cream, apple cider, pies, and much more. There are tons of different trees that bloom beautiful flowers that make for amazing views!
Attend a Fall Festival
- Sugar Land Fall Fest – Sugar Land Town Square – 2711 Plaza Drive, Sugar Land, TX 77479
Sugar Land’s first in-person Fall Fest will feature live music, food, dance, art, and fashion! Other event activities include carnival games, art demos, hayrides, and a family fun zone. Join the fun on September 24 at 10AM.
- Dewberry Farm – 7705 FM 362 Brookshire, TX 77423
Fall Festival begins September 24, 2023, 10AM – 6PM and includes live events, Tug-o-War, hayrides, a candy cannon, a pumpkin patch, and more!
Visit a Local Pumpkin Patch

Open on the weekends from September 17th-November 20th, you can pick your own pumpkins!

Only in October are you able to find your perfect pumpkin at this farm!

- Pecan Grove Farmers and Artisan Market – 729 Farm to Market 359, Richmond, TX 77406
Open on Sundays from 10 AM – 2 PM where you can find homemade ice cream and fresh baked goods along with fresh local produce.
Best Places That Sell Pie
- Kilwins – 16029 City Walk, Sugar Land, TX 77479, United States
The store is open from 12:00 pm- 8:00 pm, Monday through Sunday, where you can find fresh hand-crafted confections.
- Three Brothers Bakery – 4036 S Braeswood Blvd, Houston, TX 77025, United States
For over 60 years, this family-owned bakery has been baking custom cakes, pecan pies, and many other desserts. The shop is open Monday through Sunday from 7 am to 7 pm.
- Flying Saucer Pie Company – 436 W Crosstimbers St, Houston, TX 77018, United States
The stalwart family-run business serves hand-crafted fruit pies and banana pies in a warm setting that's open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 am to 7 pm.

A Classic American diner serves burgers, salads, sandwiches, breakfast fare, and homemade pies. The store is open from 7 am to 12 am Monday to Sunday.

Get Spooked at a Haunted House

Come to the Haunted House this October! Open on the weekends, along with Halloween Day and Nov 5th-6th & 12th-13th. You'll find live music, zombie paintball, midway games, and multiple haunted houses.
- Phobia Haunted Houses – 5250 S Sam Houston Pkwy E. Houston, Tx 77048
Open on weekends and of course Halloween Day, it starts the last week of September and runs through the first weekend of November. It includes eight different houses that will thrill you and your friends.
- Redrum Fear Park – 1800 E Hwy 90A Richmond, TX 77406
Opening the first weekend of October and running through the first weekend of November, come on the weekends (and a couple of Sundays) to see what's to fear in the four different line-ups.
Hike in a National Park
- Big Thicket National Preserve – FM 420, Kountze, TX 77625, United States
This is the only one that is a convenient day trip from the city, as it’s situated about an hour and 40 minutes away by car. Big Thicket protects a long, narrow preserve lining the banks of a few meandering creeks. This kind of environment consists of multiple interrelated habitats that attract a wide variety of wildlife. Among the nine different ecosystems in the park are pine forest, bayous, and wetlands. Popular activities here are kayaking, canoeing, and hiking. There are about 40 miles of hiking trails in the park.
- Waco Mammoth National Monument – 6220 Steinbeck Bend Dr, Waco, TX 76708, United States
Waco Mammoth National Monument one of the best national parks near Houston is where you can see a collection of “in situ” fossils, meaning that they’re still embedded in the place where they were originally discovered.

Watch an Autumn Sunset

Twilight Epiphany Skyspace is an architectural and artistic marvel. It also serves as a laboratory for the Shepherd School of Music. With two viewing platforms and a LED show right around sunset, the rooftop upper deck offers an extraordinary view of the Houston skyline.
Take a Hayride

If you're in the mood for a fun day out, this farm is the place to visit. There are lots of attractions: giant slides, trike racing, barrel train rides, and animal shows. You can even go strawberry picking or choose your own flowers!
- Oil Ranch – 23501 Macedonia Rd, Hockley, TX 77447, United States
Oil Ranch offers many fun activities for the whole family, including cow milking, pony rides, mini golf, hay ride, and a petting zoo. The pumpkin patch is a great place to pick out the perfect pumpkin for Halloween! It will open on October 1st, 2023.

- 73rd Annual H-E-B Thanksgiving Day Parade – Near City Hall on Smith St.
On November 24 at 9AM, gather around in downtown Houston for this spectacular parade! With over 20 blocks long of floats, marching bands and balloons!
